Working Combination Safe

A couple of weeks ago I stumbled upon some videos explaining how combination locks work and immediately headed to my LEGO collection to see if I could build one of my own.  I decided to build a typical 3 number combination lock and incorporate it into a LEGO safe. Check out the video to see exactly how it works. Step by step building instructions can be found below.

Some notes on the construction.

For the ‘numbered’ dial I’m using the printed dish from set 4488 Mini Mellennium Falcon, which was released way back in 2003.  There are a couple of other printed dishes that might work, but none of them are all that readily available. I would recommend just custom decorating a regular dish.

Be sure you actually know the combination before fully assembling and locking the safe! I designed this safe so that you can’t just take it apart normally. If you have to break into it you might have to physically break some pieces.

You can actually change the combination by changing where the ‘tabs’ are located on the discs. Using the axles like I have done only really gives you a few options of where to put them, but you can use other parts to create the tabs as well.

  1. Hi Jason and Krystal,
What are your conditions for “remixing” your instructions? I would like to modify your safe design a bit, mainly because I do not have all the parts. Could I then post the modified version with something like CC-BY-SA?

    • Yup, that’s fine with us. It doesn’t explicitly indicate on those instructions (they are pretty old), but all our free instructions are shared under CC BY-NC.

  2. Hey there, i started a new job about a month ago and saw the combination safe model sitting around still sealed nothing open. Brought it home to assemble it, and still in the first bag i am missing this part (Light Bluish Gray Technic Brick 1 x 2 with Axlehole Type 2) was wondering if there is somewhere i can get those, they are probably generic and done have to be custom ordered or anything. Any help would do thank you so much

    • They should be readily available from lego.com (Pick A Brick section, part 31493), or bricklink.com.

  3. I made this without some of the pieces that were needed mostly because I didn’t have the piece to add the two tumblers together.if you don’t have the piece for that use an x-axle(the rod that looks like an x) slip it between the two and have something to hold the other side of the 1 by 2 brick that has a hole in the middle. This may make you have less space but at least allows you to have a working tumbler.

If a picture is needed to show what I mean please ask and I will see if I can post it

  4. The Paradisa set 6409 Island Arcade has a colored/numbered dish that worked well for my safe, thanks go out to my sister for letting me have all her old Legos!
